The religion on the teachings of Jesus had its beginnings in Judea, a Jewish ruled kingdom which became an area in the Roman Empire in 63 B.C.E.. To govern the the small regions, the Roman leaders put pro-Roman Jewish leaders in charge where large numbers of Jews lived. Many Jews did not like the idea of having Roman control, Rome had put a pro-Roman Jewish leader, Herod, in charge of Judea in 37 B.C.E.. While Herod was king Jesus was born. Some Jews thought that he was a messiah that they had waited for. Herod wanted to kill Jesus because Herod didn't want to lose being worshiped. Herod began killing all the children under the age of 3. Later when Jesus was still alive, Jesus was crucified at the age of 33 at Golgotha. Christians believed that Jesus rose from the grave 3 days later on the day that we call Easter. He ascended into Heaven and Christians believe that he will return again. St. Peter carried on Jesus's legacy by becoming the first pope and founding the first church. Jesus sacrificed his life out of love and compassion for the human kind. Eternal life was available for everyone if one believed that Jesus was God's son and agreed with his teachings.
